Breakthrough in Spine Surgery

spine Transcutaneous Lumbar Disc Resection surgeryBack and neck pain can be debilitating, resulting in loss of time you spend at work, school, sports and enjoying daily life. While there are many options for spine treatment, one of the most exciting breakthroughs in minimally invasive spine surgery is the Transcutaneous Lumbar Disc Resection.

  • Less invasive than most other spine surgery procedures
  • Typically results in a much faster recovery time
  • Patients usually need just days off work, school or sports, rather than weeks or months.

Over 5,000 Discs and Counting

Dr. Marks has performed this minimally invasive procedure on over 5,000 discs. His expertise came from both his training in spinal function and anatomy, and from doing significantly more of these minimally invasive surgeries than any other spine specialist in the United States!

How is this Procedure Performed?

This minimally invasive spine procedure is performed while the patient remains asleep. The patient is monitored safely by anesthesia specialists under the influence of IV analgesia, often referred to as “twilight sleep,” rather than a general anesthetic. This less invasive type of surgery does not require placing a breathing tube down a patient’s throat, typically resulting in easier, faster, and better overall recovery.

Using specially crafted proprietary tools, the symptomatic disc or discs are operated on through what is known as a lateral extraforaminal approach. Through the small surgical incision, a small amount of the inner part of the shock absorbing disc (the nucleus) is removed. This results in decompression, which serves to minimize painful pressure on the cracks in the disc itself, as well as surrounding nerve tissue.

Alternative to Certain Spine Surgeries

One of the biggest questions regarding this minimally invasive spine procedure is “what other spine procedures can be avoided by choosing this effective alternative?” Generally speaking, the Transcutaneous Lumbar Disc Resection approach to the symptomatic disc will frequently be done instead of, and for the same indications as, complex spinal fusion or a laminectomy.

Are You a Candidate?

While a large number of patients may be candidates for this spine surgery alternative, a full consultation and evaluation by spine specialist Dr. Richard A. Marks is necessary.
